artist statement

“I'm a painter. I paint to explore emotions and navigate grief and loss. My work evolves through experiment and many stages, until I achieve a feeling that resonates.

My most recent work, Blaze, where the paintings imagined relate to the wildfires in LA, to those in other worlds which stem from my imagination.

The painting that inspired that series I made for the Art Riddler exhibition '24 which won the Evans Award.

My focus is to portray an emotional quality. In order to achieve this I have to allow myself the space and time to explore experiment and resolve.

Much of my  work explores and records the landscape, the subject within the landscape, warm and cool colours and light and dark.

The views which surround me daily are a direct source of inspiration which I find endlessly fascinating and challenging.

Initially I created abstract watercolours based on the wild landscape and light of west Clare, culminating in my first solo exhibition in Cork in 2004.

As the work developed, the subject matter became more representational, the perspective more traditional and I began to work on oil on canvas.

I work on a number of paintings simultaneously. I work both outdoors and in my studio. I make field studies and gather photo references. I analyse plan and imagine what I want to do in a painting. Some subjects work best as small paintings some as large. Changes that will enhance or strengthen a painting are considered and then employed to that end.

I live and work in Youghal, County Cork. I am a professional member of Visual Arts Ireland, a member of Sample Studios, Backwater Artists, Mór Artists Collective, Cnoc Buí Arts Centre, Uillinn Arts Centre, Artnetdlr, Ranelagh Arts Centre and most recently The High Tide Contemporary.”
