artist statement
This work affirms the need to look at our cities and built environment and realize the importance of nature to our survival and place on the planet. I manipulate space and structure to render moments between abstraction and representation, moments of reflection on how we live, and what needs to be done for nature to survive with our urban environment. Trees and parks provide enormous benefit to citizens in many ways - they are a vital part of urban living for health, well being and the environment. Layering, space, line, color and form are the ingredients of the painting. The painting is assembled like a collage, - there is constant change - elements are repositioned, rearranged, reassembled until a satisfactory composition is achieved. The paintings are acrylic, plaster, collage and charcoal on canvas or board. I started this series with the idea of combining nature and culture. But maybe this work will inspire reflection, change and urban renewal -city gardens and city forests. There is a symbiosis between nature and the "man-made " - one that is mutually dependent. I try to show this in my paintings by combining nature with architectural and structural elements.
