artist statement

Growing up and living in the countryside has influenced the way I see the world around me. Ireland, with all its beauty and its ruggedness is a constant inspiration. I'm fascinated by the sky, the seasons, the transitions from each day to night and I try and show the emotion I feel through my paintings. The forgotten roads, the old rundown cottages and the wildlife of Ireland are what attract me most of all. There is a story in the everyday things that surround us and I paint those that I find most interesting.

My paintings often begin with a loose sketch using charcoal or PanPastel which I love for the marks they achieve and the speed at which I can work.

I mostly use a mixed media approach layering different media such as charcoal, ink, pastel and oil paint to achieve what I'm trying to convey.

Other times, especially with landscape painting I will simply use oil paint.
